Columbia, SC - August 16, 2004 - Nearly 1,000 claims have been received so far after three days of collecting insurance claims as a result of Hurricane Charley. This number resulted from a survey of 20 insurance companies that do business in South Carolina. It is expected the numbers will continue to increase.  Most of the claims are being reported in the Georgetown and Myrtle Beach areas. This brings the total estimated insured property damage to approximately $1.8 million as of 3:00 today.

The average claim amount is approximately $2,000. Official insurance property loss estimates will be available from Property Claims Services (PCS) shortly.

Insurance industry response teams are along the South Carolina coast and have emergency offices set up. Additional claims representatives and adjusters are available to handle claim settlements and to speed recovery.
